Stairs & Landing

* The Stairs and Landing would normally reflect the style and lighting design of the Entrance Hall, so follow through and continue the style established in the Entrance Hall.

* If there is a window on the half-landing, use in-sill uplighters to create a dramatic effect - this will complement the steplights and low-level floorwashers as background lighting and as a pathway to the bedrooms.

* A classic-style Landing may have a console table along one or more walls, so allow 5amp wall-sockets for table lamps, which will provide ambient lighting, as in the Hall.

* This area can feel like a corridor so, to reduce this effect, light the side walls, rather than down the middle. This can be achieved either with recessed downlights or with wall-lights.

* Use recessed downlights to light potential picture positions, or simply to wash the walls with light. Set them at 400mm back from the wall (450mm for ceilings over 3m).

* Lantern-style pendants or wall-lights can look good along the Landing, providing ambient lighting. Select wall-lights, which won't protrude into the walkway and get knocked.

* Think about light-switch positions and rationalise as far as possible - a switch outside every bedroom/bathroom can be too much.
